A Hot Sticky Summer Wedding

July 21st, 2022

Join us for a luminous night of mischievousness and revelry!

Oh snap! It finally happened! We’re so excited to begin this new chapter of our life together, and we’d love nothing more than to celebrate with all our closest people!

We’ve chosen to celebrate in our home borough of Brooklyn. For those coming from farther afield, we’re thrilled to be able to share our magical city with you! For those already in NYC, take a hot, sticky subway out to Gowanus and dance with us till an irresponsible hour!

🕺👯💃

  • Peter! Tasnima!

If that doesn’t ring a bell then maybe you’re on the wrong wedding site?

100 brownie points to anyone who can come up with the best couple name for us! (redeemable for actual Brownies)

  • We’re getting married!

  • We’re celebrating on Thursday, July 21st, 2022! We don’t yet have a detailed timeline, but the event will start sometime in the early evening and run till late. We fully expect there to be additional funtivities surrounding the date, so feel free to stay through the weekend following for extra pizza and bagels.

  • The Green Building! It’s a beautiful space in the Gowanus neighborhood of Brooklyn. Originally constructed in 1889 as a brass foundry, the 6,000 sqft open warehouse space is lusciously enclosed by more exposed brick than your Tribeca apartment could even dream of. There’s also a shaded patio perfect for those long, sticky summer nights New York is known for.

  • What you’re comfortable in! It’s going to be Brooklyn in July so it’ll be hot, humid, and sticky. Easy and breezy? All good! Tuxedo? Bring it on! Desi clothes for the Desi folks? Sure! It is a Desi wedding after all. We just want everyone to feel confident, comfortable, and like themselves.

  • Yes! We are currently planning to have a gaye holud the night before the wedding. Come and smear us with turmeric and feed us sweets.

For those who have no clue what I’m talking about and need more context, the Gaye holud is an important pre wedding tradition at Bengali weddings. It is somewhat equivalent to a shower. The term Gaye Holud translates roughly to body tumeric, It doesn't sound that great but it's one of the most enjoyable ceremonies.

Family members line up and shower the couple with flower petals, gifts and sweets. Families bring presents for the couple which arrives in huge dalas or trays. They include gifts such as the couple’s wedding day outfits, jewellery, and sweets. Sometimes fresh fish is also sent decorated like the bride and groom.

Tumeric is an antiseptic with healing properties. It also leaves skin with a glow. For the holud ceremony, fresh tumeric is made into a paste with some water or milk and applied to the bride/grooms face, arms and feet. It is believed to beautify the couple for their wedding day. The couple is also fed Bengali sweets to add sweetness to their married life.

  • The day will start with a big, chaotic, buffet-style dinner. We’ll then gather everyone together for a moment of sincerity as we officially tie the knot, and our lives, into one exquisite tangle. Then it’s right back to chaos as we roll out the bar-cart, cha, and mishti for a long sweaty night of debauchery.

Brooklyn’s best

Coming from out of town? We’ve put together a few recommendations for local hotels, restaurants, and fun things to do around our home Borough.
